Why is my wireless microphone cutting in and out?

Intermittent operation can be caused by several different things:

Your battery could be loose. The quickest way to test this is to remove the battery cover from transmitter while it is turned on. Try gently moving the battery around. If this causes your transmitter to cut out, your battery is not fitting snugly into the transmitter. This can happen when the metal prongs which contact the battery terminals get bent out of shape, or when the foam-rubber pad at the base of the battery compartment gets worn away. The battery you are using may have a low charge. Try using a fresh battery (or freshly charged if you use rechargeable batteries).

Your headset microphone may not be plugged into the transmitter properly. Most wireless systems use a connector that only fits in one way. If you the connector does not plug in all the way, you may not have it aligned properly. You should only have to press gently for the connector to plug in properly. If it simply will not plug in all the way, the connector on the cable or the jack on the transmitter may be damaged and will likely require service.

Your headset microphone's cable or connector may be damaged. Inspect the cable, checking for any kinks or bends. If touching these areas of the cable causes the sound to crackle or cut out, your microphone cable is damaged and will require servicing. Damage can also occur within the connector. If the rubber shrink tubing around the connector is damaged or missing and moving the cable around near the connector causes the sound to crackle or cut out, your connector is damaged and will require servicing.

You may have your squelch control set too high. On the back of your Fitness Audio receiver you will see a squelch control (most other wireless systems have a squelch control as well, although it may not be located in the same place). If this is set too high, it may cause the receiver to cut out some of the audio erroneously. Try turning down your squelch control to see if this fixes the problem.

If your wireless system has the ability to change channels, such as the Fitness Audio UHF system, you may want to try changing the channel it is operating on. Be sure to turn your wireless system off before changing channels. For Fitness Audio systems, you will need a small screwdriver in order to do this. The channel knob on the receiver is inset into the front panel, just below and to the left of the volume knob. The channel knob on the transmitter is inside the battery compartment, on the upper right-hand side. Before you begin, take a look at the transmitter's channel knob. If the numbering starts at 1, simply change the transmitter to an arbitrary new channel number and then set the receiver to the same number. If the transmitter channel numbering starts at 0, there is an extra step. Once you have changed the channel on the transmitter, set the channel on the receiver to 1 channel higher than the channel you selected for the transmitter.

You may be using your transmitter too far away from the receiver. Most wireless receivers have an RF indicator on the front to show you how strong the signal is. As you move the transmitter away from the receiver you will see the RF signal decrease. If the RF signal level drops very low by the time you reach your teaching position or you can no longer see the receiver, you are likely too far away. If possible, try using the transmitter closer to the receiver or contact us to inquire about antenna kits (available for most Fitness Audio and E Mic wireless systems).
